Discover Galle
Galle’s Old Town and Fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage property. UNESCO records that the fortified town was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and reached the height of its development under Dutch colonial rule in the 18th century. Its significance comes in part from the way European planning and architecture were adapted to South Asian traditions and local conditions.
The historic town includes ramparts, bastions, streets and buildings within a living urban environment rather than functioning simply as an isolated monument. The relationship between the fortified town, its architecture and its coastal setting is an important part of the property.
